Diffusion of Innovation In Education

Posted By Gary B. Cohen, Wednesday, November 23, 2011
The theory of diffusion of Innovation is a general concept that explains why and how a good or bad meme can move through a social system like a set of dominos falling. It is generally believed that once the group of early adaptors take the risk of trying the concept (13.5 % of population) then the meme will become self sustaining. Often times those who may have once been seen as early adaptors faced barriers to those adaptions and became resentful of how others who were laggards and the majority treated them. Paradoxically they then become laggards themselves. When considering this mental model within education you can clearly see how the system has become entrenched with lagging behaviors and many of those who once lead the innovation becoming those that have given up on the intention of possibility.

In order to move education forward we must band together by finding all of the innovators and early adaptors to create critical mass to accomplish meeting the moral imperative for each learner.

I have attached an article by William Bergquist on The Diffusion of Innovation in the practice of Executive Coaching. See if you can identify yourself and how you are reacting to your circumstances and if that is who you want to be.
